8. Laughter is a proven coping strategy for stress

Laughter really is the best medicine. It stimulates so many of your organs- from your lungs to your muscles. It also stimulates the brain to release endorphins. Laughing can help to reduce tension, by bringing more blood flow to your muscles and relieving some symptoms of stress.[14]

In studies conducted by Dr. Lee Berk and others of Loma Linda University, Linda, California in 2006 and 2008, the researchers found that merely expecting a mirthful laughter induces production of immune boosting hormones while at the same time reduces the production of stress hormones. The hormones behind these benefits are beta-endorphins and human growth hormone.

What to do: Just find something that makes you have a good laugh. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a comedian of a friend, or a hilarious movie, as long as you’re laughing you’ll start to feel some of your stress relieved. One way is to watch humorous videos whose themes and jokes resonate with your idea of fun. Other methods include:

  • Game nights with friends you are comfortable with
  • Laugh at yourself as often as you an
  • Seek and keep company of happy people who easily laugh
